Many people dream of working from home. There are advertisements scattered all across the internet looking for those with the desire to work on their own time. Entrepreneurs with the flexibility to work from the comfort of their own home must have one important thing: discipline.
Sure, handling business calls while still in pajamas can seem like a good idea; but, what I’ve come to realize is comfort can act as kryptonite to discipline. Discipline is not a matter of comfort. As a matter of fact, it requires discomfort of some sort. I’ve heard some employees complain about having to wear uniforms, and I never understood why. Sure, one may not be able to entirely uniquely stand out while in uniform, but that is the purpose! Uniformity equates to discipline. Similar to soldiers in the military, firefighters, and Starbucks baristas, and others, uniforms demonstrate oneness. When entrepreneurs begin working for self, it is a great idea to continue to do some of the things a typical job would require including wearing a uniform.
About a year ago, I had two business shirts made. Immediately, I noticed a difference in my energy and work ethic when I wore pajamas versus when I wore my business shirt. When I wore pajamas, I was too comfortable. My mind was running on cruise control which was not advantageous to my work day. I was unfocused, walked in and out of the kitchen to get snacks, and even took breaks in between to watch some of my favorite shows on television. All bad! Before I had known it, hours passed, and I felt like an entire day was wasted. I decided it was time to try something different. I asked myself three questions:
- What motivated me to get up early to work for other companies?
- What made me feel like I was going to work aside from the commute?
- How could I feel the same way about my business that I would feel going to work for someone else?
Believe it or not, my answer began with putting on a uniform. Every job I’ve held, with an exception of one, required some form of uniform. That was one major reason I felt like I was going to work; so, from that day forward, I’ve been wearing my GrapeVine Sway LLC shirt with black slacks. It has put my mindset in work mode and gets me ready to put in the work towards my own passion. It inspires me to work hard to leave behind a legacy.
