Music Motivates Me

By Tequila Cheatham

People laughed at Charlie Sheen for his infamous slogan, “WINNING,” but that’s what we all want! We all want to win. No one gets up every day simply to lose and if you do, go back to sleep and wake up on the other side of the bed.

I am one of those strong people who only turn to those who are just as resilient. I may be a positive person but, oftentimes I’m motivated by outside forces. I use pain, storms, trials and tribulations as a source of fuel to drive me throughout the process of life; but, I can honestly say I could not do it without music. I write lyrics, create my own motivational songs, and even beat on the table. Music helps me breathe, and serves as a reminder that I am powerful even in the vulnerable moments. If I had to make a soundtrack of the songs I’ve listened to repeatedly,  to help get me through troubling times, and even boost me self-esteem levels, it would be the following songs:

  1. Kanye West: Stronger
  2. T.I.: Go Get It
  3. P. Diddy: Finna Get Loose
  4. T-Pain & DJ Khaled: All I Do Is Win
  5. Rick Ross: Hold Me Back
  6. Kendrick Lamar: Alright
  7. Kendrick Lamar: Don’t Kill My Vibe
  8. Kendrick Lamar: I
  9. Tupac: Keep Ya Head Up
  10. Tupac: Picture Me Rollin
  11. Mary J. Blige: Just Fine
  12. Beyonce: Who Run the World
  13. Beyonce: Diva
  14. Drake: Worse Behavior
  15. Donnie McClurkin: Stand
  16. Chris Brown: Zero
  17. Tye Tribett: I Want It All Back
  18. N.E.R.D.: Spaz
  19. Luke James: Options
  20. Elle Varner: F*ck It All
  21. Taylor Swift: Shake It Off
  22. Beyoncé: I Was Here

These songs may be all over the place, but they have one thing in common: they pushed me! I was able to get through some tough times because of the messages, and even more important, the beat.

You see, whenever I’m going through something, I dance. Whether hip-hop or liturgical dance, it’s therapeutic to stomp out the pain and celebrate moments to come. It has worked every time, and I’m grateful to have artists to help express that when I don’t feel like using words of my own.

If I had to choose ONE song out of all of the ones listed for encouraging me the most, and that stayed on repeat during from 2015 up until this day, it would hands down be: Kendrick Lamarr, “Alright.” If you have not heard it, go to Youtube and take a listen for yourself. Better yet, support his work by purchasing his album. It is well deserved.

What songs have helped you get through the last year or two?
